Abortion bill dropped
Last week the republicans were put in the position of dropping a bill due to the lack of votes. The bill in case was concerning abortion and its criminalization in all late-term cases. This bill of law was supposed to ban all abortions (except outstanding cases) for all pregnancies past 20 weeks.
The objections came from most women in the House, as well as from other Republicans. It was argued that it would be unfair towards all rape victims who are afraid to seek out the police because of fear of retaliation or out of shame.
The bill has been highly criticized both by Democrats and people from different organizations like the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. The president of this fund has stated that this bill was such a touchy subject that the Republicans promoting this bill could not even get the support of their people.
Trent Franks, one of the bills supporters stated that this bill go law came as an effort to protect both women and the unborn child. In light of the upcoming 2016 presidential elections the Republicans are trying to get female voters on their side. This is one of the main reasons why there is so much dissent between opinions. On the other hand the White House does not agree with this bill, calling it offensive to women’s right of choice and has threatened to veto it.
This is however not the first try to pass a bill like this. Another version of this bill was approved by the House back in 2013, however it was never considered in the Senate, mostly Democrat back then.
